What Is Shamanic Energy Healing?

There are times when healing requires more than talking about what happened.
Sometimes the body is carrying something the mind has already explained.
Sometimes patterns keep repeating even when we understand where they came from.
Sometimes healing asks us to reconnect with the body, spirit, ancestry, nature, and our own inner wisdom.
This is where shamanic energy healing can enter the conversation.
At Ashakti Wellness, we approach energy healing as part of a whole-person framework that recognizes emotional, physical, spiritual, cultural, and energetic experiences as interconnected.
What Is Shamanic Energy Healing?
Shamanic energy healing is a broad term used to describe spiritual and energetic practices influenced by shamanic traditions, ancestral healing practices, nature-based spirituality, ceremony, and energy work.
Depending on the practitioner and the tradition, shamanic energy healing may include practices such as:
energetic clearing and balancing
guided shamanic journeying
ancestral healing work
chakra awareness
drumming, rattling, or sound
breath and grounding practices
ritual and ceremony
meditation and visualization
connection with nature and the elements
intuitive spiritual practices
working with symbolism, intention, and personal meaning
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, shamanic energy healing often invites a different kind of inquiry.
What is your body communicating?
What patterns continue to repeat?
What are you carrying that may not belong to you?
Where have you become disconnected from yourself?
What needs to be acknowledged, released, reclaimed, or restored?
The Role of Energy in Shamanic Healing
Many spiritual and healing traditions around the world hold beliefs about life-force energy.
Different traditions use different names and frameworks for this concept.
Reiki practitioners may speak about universal life-force energy.
Yogic traditions may refer to prana.
Traditional Chinese medicine describes qi.
Shamanic and Indigenous healing traditions may understand energy through culturally specific teachings, ceremonies, relationships with nature, ancestors, spirits, and community.
Shamanic energy healing works within these spiritual and traditional frameworks rather than treating energy as a medical diagnosis.
For many people, energy work becomes another language for exploring how experiences are held in the body, emotions, relationships, identity, spirituality, and sense of connection.
Shamanic Healing and Ancestral Work
Ancestral healing is one of the areas that often draws people toward shamanic practice.
Families pass down much more than names and physical characteristics.
We inherit stories.
Beliefs.
Survival strategies.
Cultural traditions.
Silence.
Strength.
Fear.
Resilience.
Ways of loving.
Ways of protecting ourselves.
And sometimes patterns that nobody quite knows how to interrupt.
Ancestral healing practices invite a person to intentionally explore their relationship with lineage, family patterns, culture, memory, spirituality, and inherited meaning.
For some people, this work is symbolic and reflective.
For others, it is deeply spiritual and may include prayer, ritual, altar work, ceremony, meditation, or perceived connection with ancestors.
The goal is not to blame previous generations.
It is to become more conscious of what we are carrying so we can decide what continues with us and what ends with us.
What Does Reiki Have to Do With Shamanic Healing?
Reiki and shamanic healing are distinct practices, but some practitioners choose to integrate them.
Reiki typically focuses on intentional energy work designed to support relaxation, balance, grounding, and well-being.
Shamanic practices may expand the work through ceremony, ancestral exploration, journeying, nature-based practices, sound, symbolism, intuitive development, and spiritual reflection.
In Shamanic Reiki, Reiki can serve as the energetic foundation while shamanic practices deepen the practitioner’s relationship with intuition, ceremony, embodiment, ancestry, and spiritual connection.
The result is not simply another technique to memorize.
It becomes a deeper way of understanding how you enter healing spaces, how you listen, how you remain grounded, and how you hold space for yourself and others.
What Might a Shamanic Energy Healing Session Feel Like?
Every practitioner works differently, so there is no single standard experience.
A session may begin with conversation and intention-setting.
You may then be invited into grounding, breathwork, meditation, Reiki, drumming, sound, visualization, energy work, or ceremonial practices.
Some experiences are quiet.
Some are emotional.
Some feel deeply reflective.
Some may bring imagery, memories, sensations, or personal insight.
And sometimes the most meaningful part of the experience happens afterward, when you begin noticing what has shifted in the way you think, feel, relate, or move through your life.
There is no required spiritual experience and no particular sensation that someone must have for the work to feel meaningful.
Shamanic Energy Healing and Mental Health
Shamanic energy healing is not a replacement for psychotherapy, medical care, medication, or other licensed healthcare services.
It may be explored as a complementary spiritual or wellness practice.
This distinction is especially important for clinicians and wellness practitioners who are interested in integrating spiritual practices into their professional work.
Scope of practice matters.
Informed consent matters.
Training matters.
Cultural awareness matters.
Professional boundaries matter.
Understanding the difference between clinical treatment and spiritual wellness practice matters.
At Ashakti Wellness, integrative practice includes respecting both the possibilities and the boundaries of complementary healing traditions.
Cultural Respect Matters
Shamanic traditions are connected to Indigenous cultures and spiritual lineages across different parts of the world.
Because of this, learning shamanic practices requires more than collecting interesting techniques.
It requires respect.
Practitioners should seek to understand the origins of the practices they use, avoid presenting themselves as authorities within traditions that are not their own, and remain mindful of cultural appropriation.
The deeper question is not simply:
“What practice can I learn?”
It is also:
“How do I practice with integrity?”
Who May Be Drawn to Shamanic Energy Healing?
People are often drawn to shamanic energy healing when they are experiencing a deeper spiritual transition or feel called to expand an existing healing practice.
You may feel drawn to this work if you are:
interested in ancestral healing
exploring spirituality more deeply
wanting to strengthen your intuition
curious about ceremony and ritual
interested in nature-based spiritual practices
seeking a more embodied relationship with healing
exploring integrative wellness practices
already practicing Reiki and wanting to deepen your work
Sometimes the call is difficult to explain.
You simply know there is another layer of your healing or practice that you are ready to explore.
Healing Is Not Always About Becoming Someone New
Sometimes healing is remembering.
Remembering your body.
Remembering your voice.
Remembering your connection with nature.
Remembering the wisdom within your lineage while also choosing which patterns you will no longer carry.
Remembering that spirituality does not always have to exist somewhere outside of you.
Shamanic energy healing offers one pathway for exploring those relationships.
Not as a quick fix.
Not as an escape from the realities of life.
But as an intentional practice of listening, reconnecting, and becoming more conscious of how we move through the world.
